[Patriotic Theme |It's Only Forever - David Bowie]

Our yuletide decorations have taken on a decidedly Colonial Williamsburg style this year. Erm...yeah, not as grandiose as the above photo might suggest.

[info]hobtheknife and I went to Pier One Imports two or three weeks ago for reusable bags for gift giving. As I looked at the candleholders, dear Hob reached into a large bowl and with an elegant flourish presented me with with an artificial pomegranate. "Would you care for some refreshing fruit, my dear?" he purred, more Lucifer than Hades at that moment. "It's a pomegranate!" I squeed. "Oh, we have to have one for our winter decorations!"

I bought an iron candle holder with six gold-frosted votive cups for the mantle and this weekend we picked up some mixed evergreen branches at the local florist and some sparkly berries and leaves at the craft shop.

The candleholder sits in the center of the mantle with the greens tucked around it,interspersed with the sparkly berries and leaves and the pomegranate has the position of honour in the center, to remind us of the goddess Persephone who sojourns now with her husband, Hades.

"Hades and Persephone" by Tang Sin Yun

No one understands anymore
how beautiful he was. But Persephone remembers.
Also that he embraced her, right there,
with her uncle watching. She remembers
sunlight flashing on his bare arms.

This is the last moment she remembers clearly.
Then the dark god bore her away.

She also remembers, less clearly,
the chilling insight that from this moment
she couldn't live without him again.

Title: Dark Tales of Randamor the Recluse - Book I: The Invisible Chains
Author: Eurypon
Format: Original - Novel
Length: 190 000 (November 14, 2009)
Status
: WIP
Rating: M - NC-17
Warnings: Violence, incest, rape, non-con, domination may all occur in varying degrees
Link: aarinfantasy and fictionpress
Summary: (by the author) A long and brooding chronicle with bitterness, savage tribes, bloody battles and crowns lost and gained. About friendship in arms, love in bonds, devotion against all odds and undeserved tenderness. M/M Slash

Review: The story is set in a kind of Middle Ages. Although very recognizable, there are some differences with our actual Middle Ages. Some regions in this world have more a feel of ancient Greece.

The kingdom of Ximerion is under threat of an attack on both its southern and northern border. The danger coming from the north is far less serious and the high king sends his youngest sons to the Northern Marches, under the guidance of an old and trusted friend, both to handle the situation and to safeguard them from the far more serious situation in the south.

Almost immediately strife breaks out between the half brothers, although they also feel attracted to each other... though this attraction takes some strange forms.

Like the author states in the summary it is a long and brooding tale. It requires some investment of the reader, especially in the beginning. Those who get past the first three or four chapters are well rewarded however.

Out of the Introduction-Warning by the author:

This will be a long and brooding chronicle with bitterness and savage tribes and bloody battles and crowns lost and gained. It will tell about foul betrayal and fighting in desperate situations. About friendship in arms and love in bonds. About devotion against all odds and undeserved tenderness. About reversal of fortunes and growth in adversity.

Be warned: there will be scenes of domination and rape, but never random or unexplained. Of course there will be smut. There will also be incest. The graphic description of armed conflict and the sacking of villages and cities may not be to everybody's taste. Characters you might have grown to love will die and their death will not always be an easy one.

It is doubtful that at the end of the story there will be anybody left who is totally innocent.

natural language processing [21st. Dec, 200911:02 am]

Browsing the latest Linux Journal - there's an article introducing Cucumber, a Ruby-on-Rails testing tool. Its main appeal is supposed to be the programming syntax which allows to write scripts in almost-natural English language. A sample script looks like this:

Scenario: Users can log in by entering their name and e-mail address
Given a user named "John" "Doe" with an e-mail address "fake@abc.com"
When I go to the home page
And I fill in "fake@abc.com" for "email_address"
And I fill in "password" for "password"
And I press "submit"
Then I should see "Welcome back to the site, John!"

Holy fuck, what an abomination - it's worse than COBOL! I like programming and I like writing in English, but honestly, I think these two things do not mix. What's so great about the "real world" anyway that people always try to imitate it in the digital world? For example, visual file management (icons, drag&drop) sucks so much in comparison with the text-based console commands, yet this is the prevailing method and it's being developed further so soon you'll be able to sort the files by manually shuffling them around and visually checking one-by-one.

Is there something wrong about forcing people to learn a bunch of arcane incantations and follow strict discipline because every tiny mistake can result in a major screwup, before they're even allowed to use a computer?

Also, it would be awesome to supply every computer with an electrocution device. Making computing easier is for wimps. Maybe I can sell the idea to Google. Or to Apple? iTorture has a nice ring to it...

A somewhat curious dream which features River Tam from Firefly/Serenity. (This is funny - I consider her the most annoying character in the series, but in the dream, I seem to really care for her.)

Due to recent lawsuits cutbacks, I am in need of a medical team. If you're at least 18 qualified to be a medical doctor, you might be capable enough to follow my order. Send in all job applications with a head shot to Lisa Cuddy, Dean of Medicine at Princeton Plainsboro.

Signed,
GOD Doctor Gregory House.
